GTA 6: Rockstar Reveals How Jason and Lucia Will Really Live in Vice City
AGTA 6 is shaping up to be much more than a bigger version of the previous games.
In a newly published full interview, Rockstar North Head of Development and Co-Studio Head Rob Nelson goes into detail about what players can actually do in Vice City and the wider Leonida world.
The interview is based on an extended gameplay demonstration, giving a much closer look at Jason and Lucia, the way NPCs behave, how police react to crimes, vehicle theft, robberies, relationships and many of the small activities that could make GTA 6 feel alive even when you’re not following the main story.
And some of the details are surprisingly deep.
Jason and Lucia Can Actually Live Their Own Lives
One of the biggest changes in GTA 6 is how Rockstar is treating Jason and Lucia outside of missions.
Both characters have their own routines, meaning the character you’re not controlling isn’t simply waiting around for you.
Jason can be out doing his own thing, while Lucia can be somewhere else in the world. Players can switch between them and sometimes find the other character at their safehouse or out exploring.
Their safehouse also sounds much more interactive than previous GTA properties.
Rockstar compared it more closely to the camps in Red Dead Redemption 2, with Jason and Lucia able to spend time there, interact with objects and live together rather than simply using it as a place to save or change clothes.
Yes, Jason Can Even Be Found in the Shower
One of the more amusing moments from the demonstration showed just how much Rockstar is trying to make the characters feel like actual people.
During the demo, Rob Nelson switched from Lucia to Jason and found him in the shower.
It was a small moment, but it showed that Jason isn’t simply frozen in place until the player decides to switch to him.
The characters have routines, activities and their own lives happening around the player.
Players will also be able to change hairstyles, visit clothing stores and customise their appearance. Some safehouse options are limited, while more extensive changes require visiting places such as barbers and salons.
GTA 6’s NPCs Could Be More Interesting Than Ever
Rockstar has pushed NPC behaviour considerably further in GTA 6.
The game features a much wider variety of body types and heights, with Rockstar developing technology that allows animations to adapt to different characters.
But the biggest change could be how NPCs actually react to the player.
Players can listen to conversations happening around them, interact with people and observe how different characters respond.
However, NPCs aren’t completely oblivious.
If Jason or Lucia stands too close while listening to a conversation, people may notice them. Following someone for too long could also make that person suspicious or uncomfortable.
That means simply walking around Vice City could produce unexpected situations without the player deliberately starting a mission.
Rockstar says the team even studied real human behaviour to make these interactions feel more believable.

The World Can Fight Back
This is another major difference.
In older GTA games, the player often feels like the most dangerous person in the world unless the police are involved.
GTA 6 is trying to change that.
NPCs can react to situations themselves, pull weapons, become aggressive or get involved in an incident that started somewhere else.
That creates a world where the player isn’t always in control of what happens next.
It also means players can choose how far they want to take a situation.
You can escalate a confrontation, threaten someone, knock them out or simply leave before things become worse.
That freedom appears to be one of Rockstar’s biggest priorities.
GTA 6 Has a Criminal Profile System
GTA 6 will also track what type of criminal the player becomes.
Rockstar calls this the Criminal Profile, and it is separate from the relationship system between Jason and Lucia.
It isn’t simply a traditional good-versus-bad morality meter.
Instead, repeatedly committing unnecessary violence or causing trouble can influence how the world reacts to your character and potentially affect aspects of the narrative.
The important part is that Rockstar doesn’t want players to feel like there is one correct way to play.
You can be careful and keep a low profile, or you can create complete chaos.
Your choices can gradually shape the experience.

Police Won’t Automatically Know Everything
The wanted system has also received a major overhaul.
A crime generally needs to be witnessed or trigger an alarm before the police are alerted.
Once law enforcement is searching for Jason or Lucia, the game can track details such as what they were wearing and which vehicle they were using.
This creates a new Heat system.
Changing clothes can help remove that attention, while switching vehicles or splitting Jason and Lucia up can also make it harder for police to identify them.
The game even allows players to hide in places such as shops while the police search nearby.
So escaping the police isn’t necessarily about driving as fast as possible anymore.
Sometimes the smarter option may be to disappear.
Stealing Cars Is More Complicated
Car theft is another system Rockstar has expanded.
Players can still carjack vehicles, but parked cars can require different tools depending on their security.
Some vehicles may require a key cloner or a slim-jim, while others have alarms or advanced trackers.
The phone can also scan vehicles and provide information about them, including their value and security features.
That information becomes important when deciding whether a vehicle is actually worth stealing.
Players can then sell certain vehicles through car fences or other businesses.
This gives vehicle theft more depth than simply pressing a button and driving away.
Jason and Lucia’s Relationship Is Optional
The relationship between Jason and Lucia is one of the biggest new ideas in GTA 6, but Rockstar doesn’t want to force players into a romance.
The pair will remain partners in crime throughout much of the story, but players can influence how close they become.
Spending time together can strengthen their relationship.
That includes normal activities such as playing pool, mini golf, kayaking, going to the gym, exploring the world or simply walking around together.
It can also include criminal activities such as robberies.
Even small interactions matter.
Players can text each other, call each other and spend time together outside missions.
Ignoring the other character completely can even have an effect on the relationship.
Rockstar has previously explained more about this approach, and we’ve covered the GTA 6 romance system in more detail.

You Can Take Jason and Lucia to the Gym
GTA 6 is also bringing back physical changes to the characters.
Jason and Lucia can visit gyms and work on their strength and muscularity.
Eating also affects the characters, with overeating potentially causing them to gain weight.
The demonstration showed that these aren’t simply menu-based statistics.
Rockstar wants physical activities to feel like part of everyday life in the open world.
You can even take both Jason and Lucia to the gym together.
Money Will Matter More
One of the most interesting comments from Rob Nelson was that money has a greater role in GTA 6’s story than in previous games.
Players will sometimes need to make money to progress.
That can involve boosting cars, robbing businesses or taking part in other criminal activities.
This makes the open world more important because earning money isn’t necessarily something you only do when completing a main mission.
The game gives Jason and Lucia reasons to go out and make money between major story moments.
Robberies Are Part of Everyday Gameplay
GTA 6 isn’t treating robberies as something reserved only for major missions.
Players can discover different opportunities while simply travelling around the world.
During the demonstration, Jason and Lucia came across a police impound lot and decided to steal a vehicle.
They can also rob shops, pawn stores, jewellery stores and other locations.
Some robberies can be approached together, while others can be handled alone.
This creates the possibility of simply exploring the map and finding your own opportunities rather than following objectives all the time.
Snapmatic Returns
Social media is also coming back through Snapmatic.
Players can browse posts and follow people within the game’s social network.
However, because Jason and Lucia are criminals on the run, Rockstar confirmed that players won’t be posting as them.
Instead, they’ll mostly be observing what is happening online.
It’s another small feature that helps make the world feel connected beyond the main missions.
There Are Plenty of Things to Do Outside the Story
The interview makes it clear that Rockstar doesn’t expect players to rush through the main campaign.
Jason and Lucia can go kayaking, scuba diving, parachuting, visit the beach, study animals, explore the city, go shopping, visit salons, work out and spend time together.
Players can also use taxis for travel, with conversations taking place during the journey.
Animal studying returns in a way similar to Red Dead Redemption 2, giving players another reason to interact with wildlife without simply hunting it.
These smaller activities could become a major part of how players experience GTA 6.

GTA 6 Is Built Around Choice
Perhaps the biggest message from the interview is that Rockstar wants players to have more control over how they experience the game.
There are choices during missions, choices during robberies and choices in the open world.
Some decisions may be small, while others can have much bigger consequences.
Rockstar is also trying to make missions feel less disconnected from the open world.
If a mission can work with the same systems used during free roam, the developers want to give players more freedom instead of forcing them down one exact path.
That could make GTA 6 feel less like a collection of missions and more like one huge living world.
GTA 6 Could Be Designed for Years of Discovery
The full interview gives perhaps the clearest look yet at Rockstar’s ambitions for GTA 6.
The goal isn’t simply to create a larger map.
Rockstar wants Vice City and Leonida to feel like places where things are constantly happening, whether you’re completing a story mission, escaping the police, stealing a car, spending time with Lucia, listening to NPC conversations or simply walking around.
We’ve already seen several new GTA 6 details from Rockstar’s recent reveals, but this interview adds another layer to the picture.
GTA 6 is still scheduled to release on November 19, 2026, and if these systems work as Rockstar intends, there could be plenty for players to discover long after the main story is finished.
For fans waiting for the release, our GTA 6 global countdown is already counting down to the big day.
The biggest question now is how many of these details Rockstar is still keeping hidden.
And judging by this interview, there may be a lot more waiting to be discovered.
