A planned GTA 6 Miami takeover could be facing trouble after Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz and Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez criticized proposals to promote Grand Theft Auto 6 across major parts of the city.
The upcoming Rockstar Games title is set in Vice City, the fictionalized version of Miami that fans of the Grand Theft Auto series will return to when GTA 6 launches on November 19, 2026.
While Rockstar has not officially confirmed a major city-wide promotional takeover, reports recently revealed that Miami-Dade officials had discussed possible GTA 6-themed ideas with Rockstar Games.
Those proposals reportedly included adding Vice City branding to Miami’s Metro system, installing Vice City-themed manhole covers, and displaying “Welcome to Vice City” signage at Miami International Airport.
However, the plans have now attracted criticism from local officials.
Miami-Dade Sheriff Questions GTA 6 Promotion
Miami-Dade Sheriff Rosie Cordero-Stutz has voiced concerns about publicly promoting a game franchise that revolves heavily around crime and violence.
Speaking to NBC Miami, Cordero-Stutz argued that the themes represented in Grand Theft Auto are very different from the work carried out by local law enforcement.
Grand Theft Auto 6 will once again allow players to experience a fictional world involving criminals, illegal businesses, vehicle theft, violence and other criminal activities.
According to the sheriff, publicly promoting that fictional version of Miami could send the wrong message while law enforcement agencies continue working to combat real-world crime.

She specifically questioned whether government-owned locations and assets should be used to promote a fictional representation of the community built around criminal activity.
Commissioner Also Opposes “Vice City Airport” Idea
Commissioner Juan Carlos Bermudez also criticized the reported plans, particularly the idea of temporarily branding Miami International Airport as “Vice City Airport.”
Bermudez argued that Miami-Dade has spent decades building its reputation as an international destination for tourism, business and investment.
His concern is that turning major public locations into GTA 6 advertisements could associate the real Miami area too closely with the fictional criminal world portrayed in Grand Theft Auto.
The comments could make a proposed GTA 6 Miami promotional campaign more difficult to organize, although there does not appear to be a finalized public agreement covering the reported ideas.
GTA 6 Has Strong Connections to Miami
The controversy comes as Rockstar Games continues preparing for one of the biggest video game launches ever.
GTA 6 takes players back to Vice City, a setting originally introduced in 2002’s Grand Theft Auto: Vice City. This time, Rockstar is creating a much larger and more detailed version of the fictional Florida-inspired region.
The game’s trailers have already shown numerous locations, streets, businesses, beaches and landmarks inspired by South Florida.
That connection between GTA 6 and Miami has also created an obvious marketing opportunity for local businesses and officials, particularly with millions of players expected to follow the game’s launch.
For Miami, a large-scale GTA 6 takeover could potentially generate significant attention from tourists, gamers and media outlets around the world.
Will Miami Still Get a GTA 6 Takeover?
For now, the future of the proposed GTA 6 Miami takeover remains unclear.
The reported ideas appear to have been part of discussions rather than a fully approved city-wide campaign, meaning the criticism from local officials could influence whether any of them eventually become reality.
Rockstar Games has not announced an official Miami-wide Vice City takeover at this time.
With GTA 6 scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, however, there is still plenty of time for Rockstar and Miami-Dade officials to develop other promotional ideas.
Whether Miami ultimately embraces its fictional alter ego or keeps Vice City branding away from major public locations, one thing is already clear: the connection between GTA 6 and the real city of Miami is becoming one of the game’s most interesting real-world stories.
