GTA VI Age Rating Explained: ESRB, PEGI 18 and Worldwide Ratings Explained
Grand Theft Auto VI is getting closer to launch, and one important piece of information has finally started appearing across official storefronts and rating boards: the GTA 6 age rating.
As expected for a Grand Theft Auto game, Rockstar’s next open-world crime adventure is aimed firmly at adult players.
The ESRB has officially rated GTA VI M for Mature 17+ in the United States and Canada. In Europe, the game is being listed as PEGI 18, while other countries have issued their own classifications with slightly different descriptions.
Here’s a look at the ratings that have appeared so far and what they actually tell us about GTA 6.
GTA 6 Gets an M Rating From the ESRB
The ESRB has officially classified Grand Theft Auto VI as M for Mature 17+ on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
The rating includes several familiar content descriptors:
- Blood and Gore
- Intense Violence
- Mature Humor
- Nudity
- Strong Language
- Strong Sexual Content
- Use of Drugs and Alcohol
The ESRB also lists In-Game Purchases as an interactive element.
None of those descriptors will come as a huge surprise to longtime GTA players. The series has always been built around adult themes, violence, strong language and criminal activity.
Interestingly, the ESRB’s current GTA VI listing does not include a “Users Interact” descriptor.
That is worth noting because the current official PlayStation listing describes GTA VI as a single-player experience.

What Does PEGI 18 Mean for GTA 6?
For players in the UK and much of Europe, GTA 6 is being classified as PEGI 18.
Some Xbox storefronts have displayed the rating as PEGI 18 Provisional, while other regional listings now show PEGI 18 alongside descriptors covering violence, sex, drugs and in-game purchases.
PEGI 18 means the game is restricted to adults.
The classification itself isn’t surprising, but the descriptions attached to GTA VI give players a better idea of the mature themes Rockstar is including this time around.

A Detailed PEGI Rating Was Briefly Published
There is another interesting part of the story.
A much more detailed GTA VI classification appeared on PEGI’s website before being removed.
Because that page is no longer publicly available, its additional details should be treated with more caution than the ratings that remain officially visible.
The removed information reportedly went into much greater detail about the game’s violence, drug use and sexual content.
That includes claims about more graphic violence and specific drug-use mechanics.
Rather than treating every detail from the removed page as confirmed, it’s safer to separate those reports from the ratings that are still publicly listed.
The important takeaway is that the official PEGI classification itself is 18, with violence, sex, drugs and in-game purchases identified as relevant content.

Australia Has Given GTA 6 an R18+ Rating
Australia has also officially classified GTA VI.
The Australian Classification Board has given the game an R 18+ classification.
Its consumer advice identifies:
- High impact violence
- Sex scenes
- Drug use
The classification was issued on August 27, 2026, and lists Rockstar Games as the developer, Rockstar North as the publisher and Take-Two Interactive as the production company.
The Australian rating therefore gives a slightly different perspective from the ESRB and PEGI classifications, particularly by describing violence, sex and drug use as high impact.
New Zealand Has Also Rated GTA 6 R18
New Zealand has followed with an R18 classification.
Its official listing includes:
- Graphic violence
- Drug use
- Offensive language
- Sex scenes
- Nudity
The classification was entered into New Zealand’s official register on October 2, 2026.
Once again, the exact wording differs between rating boards, but the overall message is consistent: GTA 6 is designed for an adult audience.
GTA 6 Has an 18+ Rating in Singapore
The Singapore PlayStation Store currently displays an IARC 18+ classification for GTA VI.
Its listed descriptors include discriminatory language, extreme violence, nudity and strong language.
The store also indicates that in-game purchases are optional.
IARC ratings can look different from ESRB or PEGI classifications because they are part of an international system used across participating digital storefronts.
Saudi Arabia Has a 21+ Classification
One of the higher age classifications currently appearing for GTA 6 is in Saudi Arabia.
The official Saudi Arabian Xbox Store listing gives the game a 21 age classification.
Unlike the ESRB listing, it does not currently provide the same detailed breakdown of the mature content alongside the age rating.
What the GTA 6 Age Ratings Tell Us
When all of these classifications are put together, there is a pretty clear picture.
GTA 6 is being positioned as an adults-only experience across the major rating systems, with violence, drugs, strong language, nudity and sexual content appearing repeatedly in the classifications.
The ESRB rating is particularly interesting because its seven main content descriptors are actually the same ones previously assigned to GTA V.
The Australian classification goes a little further by specifically describing violence, drug use and sex as high impact.
The detailed PEGI page that was briefly available contained even more specific information, but because that page was removed, those additional claims should be treated separately from the ratings that remain publicly verifiable.
For fans following the latest GTA 6 news, the age ratings are another sign that Rockstar is moving through the final stages of preparing the game for its November launch.
GTA VI is currently scheduled to Global release on November 19, 2026, for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
And with more regional ratings expected, there could still be additional information revealed before launch.
