GTA 6 Online Could Face a Major Problem With GTA Online Players

One of the biggest questions surrounding GTA 6 has nothing to do with its map or characters. It’s what Rockstar plans to do with GTA Online once the new game arrives.

Rockstar has talked openly about GTA 6 as a single-player experience, but so far the company hasn’t shared much about its plans for a new online mode. That is surprising considering how successful GTA Online has become since launching with GTA 5 in 2013.

GTA Online has built up a huge player base over the years, with players spending hundreds or even thousands of hours building businesses, collecting cars and creating their own characters. Moving those players to a new game won’t be easy, especially if it means leaving years of progress behind.

GTA Online Players May Not Want to Start Again

This is where Rockstar faces a difficult decision. Valve veteran Chet Faliszek recently pointed out that GTA Online’s success could make the transition particularly complicated.

Players aren’t simply attached to the game itself. Many have invested a huge amount of time and money into their characters, properties, vehicles and businesses. Asking everyone to start again in GTA 6 Online could be a tough sell.

Rockstar could continue supporting GTA Online while building its new multiplayer mode, but that would mean maintaining two large online games at the same time. Alternatively, the company could gradually move its attention toward GTA 6 Online and reduce the amount of new content coming to GTA Online.

Either way, some players are likely to be unhappy.

GTA 6 Could Change More Than Just the Online Mode

GTA 6 is already making major changes to some of the series’ familiar mechanics. Vehicle theft is one example. Instead of simply walking up to a car and driving away, players may have to deal with different security systems, tools and tracking devices. As well GTA 6 Is Completely Changing How You Steal Cars.

If Rockstar brings some of these deeper systems into GTA 6 Online, the new multiplayer experience could feel very different from GTA Online. The same could apply to robberies, police pursuits and other activities that have become a major part of the current game.

What Happens to GTA Online After GTA 6?

Rockstar could keep GTA Online running for years after GTA 6 launches. The game is still making money and attracting players, so there is little reason to shut it down immediately.

The bigger question is how much support it will receive once Rockstar’s attention shifts toward GTA 6.

A gradual slowdown may be the easiest approach. GTA Online could continue receiving smaller updates while GTA 6 Online becomes the main focus. Another possibility is for both games to exist separately, giving players the choice of staying with GTA Online or moving to the new version.

There is also the question of player progression. Rockstar hasn’t explained whether GTA Online characters, vehicles, money or purchases will carry over to GTA 6 Online. Until the company officially reveals its plans, there is no clear answer.

GTA 6 Online Remains a Big Mystery

For now, Rockstar is keeping its cards close to its chest. The studio has shown plenty of GTA 6 gameplay, but its multiplayer plans remain one of the game’s biggest mysteries.

Considering how important GTA Online has become to Rockstar, the company will have to be careful with whatever comes next. GTA 6 Online won’t just be another multiplayer mode. It will be following one of the most successful online experiences in gaming.

GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on November 19, 2026, for PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until Rockstar finally talks about GTA 6 Online, players will have to wait and see how the company plans to handle the transition from GTA Online.
